Keeping NYC's Sluice Gate Clear and Functional

Overview

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection faced the challenge of preventing the freezing and blockage of the sluice gate in a stormwater overflow dam. The stagnant water in the dam needed to be agitated to maintain proper flow and prevent the gate from becoming obstructed.

Solution

Sonic Air Systems developed a Sonic Centrifugal Blower System housed in a weather-proof acoustic enclosure. This system was specifically tailored to deliver high volumes of low-pressure air through an underwater network of pipes. The purpose was to agitate the stagnant water along the sluice gate and prevent freezing during winter.

Result

The successful installation of the Sonic Centrifugal Blower System enabled the New York City Department of Environmental Protection to maintain control over the storm water flow, even in freezing temperatures. The blower system effectively prevented the sluice gate from freezing over and ensured the uninterrupted drainage of storm water throughout the winter season. With Sonic Air Systems' engineered solution, the department was able to protect critical infrastructure and avoid disruptions caused by frozen water.
